WITCH AND THE CASSAVA ORIGIN
LA
BRUJA Y EL ORIGEN DE LA MANDIOCA

Once upon a time there was a
beautiful girl who was trying to harvest cassava roots.
Una vez hubo una muchacha
muy hermosa que trataba de cosechar raíces de palmera.
But all of a sudden, she saw
a boy trying to kill a beautiful and colorfull maracaná bird with a bow and an
arrow.
Pero de repente, ella vió un
muchacho tratando de matar una hermosa y colorida ave maracaná con un arco y
una flecha.
So, she yell at the boy to
make the bird fly away, suddenly the boy looked at Ñasaindi the girl.
Entonces, ella le gritó al
muchacho para que el ave vuele lejos, de repente el muchacho miró a Ñasaindí la
muchacha.
Catupirí the boy ask a Ñasaindí
what she was doing in the land of his father and of his Sagua.á tribe.
Catupirí el muchacho
preguntó a Ñasaindí que estaba haciendo en la tierra de su papá y de su tribu
Sagua.á.
She said she needed palm
roots to make baskets for the woman with whom she lived with.
Ella dijo que ella
necesitaba raíces para hacer canastas para la mujer con quien ella vivía.
The boy Catupirí harvested
the palm roots for her. She said ¡Thank you!.
El muchacho Catupirí cosechó
las raíces de las palmeras para ella. Ella dijo ¡Gracias!.
But the boy couldn´t leave
her alone because he fell in love as well as Ñasaindi therefore they decided to
go to his village.
Pero el muchacho no pudo
dejarla sola porque se enamoró así como también Ñasaindi, es por eso que ellos
decidieron ir a la villa del muchacho.
The boy told her to stay in
a small house in order to tell the next day to his father and mother that he
was going to marry her.
El muchacho le dijo a ella
que se quede en una casa pequeña con el fin de decir el próximo día a su padre
y a su madre que el iba a casarse con ella.
But the witch saw everything
and announced the leader of the village, the father of Catupirí that there was
an intruder of bad luck.
Pero la bruja vió todo y le
anuncio a el líder de la villa, el papá de Catupirí, que había un intruso de
mala suerte.
The father of Catupirí got
angry because of the gossip of the witch. Anymay whenever Catupiri´s father saw
Ñasaindi he agreed and consented the marriage.
El papá de Catupirí se enojó
por el rumor de la bruja. De todas formas cuando el padre de Catupirí vió a
Ñasaindí él estuvo de acuerdo y consintió el matrimonio.
After many years
whenever Catupirí and Ñasaindí had a son
of five years old, the witch decided to make a poison blended with sugar in
order to give to all the children in village, so they would die.
Después de muchos años
cuando Catupirí y Ñasaindí tuvieron un hijo de cinco años, la bruja decidió
hacer una posión mezclada con azúcar con el fin de dar a todos los niños de la
villa para que mueran.
The witch blamed to the son
of Catupirí and Ñansaindi boy, because he was a half foreign boy.
La bruja le echó la culpa a el hijo de Catupirí y Ñasaindí
porque el era mitad forastero y mitad originario.
Alll the village decided to
kill the boy, the day came, everything was ready the llttle kid was crying and
all of a sudden a thunder kill the witch.
Toda la villa decidió matar
al niño, el día vino, todo estaba listo con el pequeño muchacho, el muchacho
estaba llorando y de repente un trueno mató a la bruja.
Catupirí and Ñasaindí
recovered their child and the drops of their tears wich have fallen to the
ground made the cassava or mandi-o was right
growing up.
Catupiri y Ñasaindi
recuperaron al niño y las gotas de las lágrimas que cayeron al suelo hicieron
crecer a la mandioca crecer ese mismo instante.
